We prove a common fixed point theorem for two pairs of weakly compatible self-mappings of a complete metric space without requiring continuity. Our result generalizes a theorem obtained by V. Popa and H. K. Pathak [An. Univ. Timisoara Ser. Mat.-Inform. 36 (1998) 101--108] and a result obtained by B. Fisher and S. Sessa [Univ. u Novom Sadu Zb. Rad. Prirod.-Mat. Fak. Ser. Mat. 16 (1986) 45--59].

Keywords: Common fixed points in metric spaces, weakly commuting mappings, compatible mappings, compatible mappings of type (A), compatible mappings of type (B), weakly compatible mappings.
